Short answer: OpenRouter is one account and one API key for 500+ AI models from 80+ providers, at the providers' own token prices with no markup. What you actually pay extra is the 5.5% fee on credit top-ups (USD 0.80 minimum) when paying by card. Worth it if you use several models or want fallbacks. Not worth it if you only ever use one provider: buy direct and skip the fee. From Thailand you pay by card in USD. Nothing official confirms baht billing or PromptPay.
What OpenRouter is, and why Thai searches more than tripled
OpenRouter describes itself as a unified API for every major LLM: one endpoint and one account instead of signing up and topping up with each provider separately. The API is OpenAI-compatible, so code already using the OpenAI SDK only needs the base URL changed to https://openrouter.ai/api/v1 and a new key.
Google Ads data (via DataForSEO, to Aug 2026) shows Thais search for openrouter 12,100 times a month on average, up from 6,600 (Sep 2025) to 22,200 (Aug 2026).

OpenRouter pricing: the real extra cost is the top-up fee
The Standard plan has no subscription. You buy credits and pay as you go, and token prices are passed through from the providers with no markup. What OpenRouter charges is a fee when you buy credits: card (Stripe) 5.5% with a USD 0.80 minimum, crypto (USDC via Coinbase) 5%. A purchase can be USD 5 to 25,000. Worked out for card payments:
| Top-up | Fee | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $10 | $0.80 (minimum applies) | 8% |
| $20 | $1.10 | 5.5% |
| $100 | $5.50 | 5.5% |
💡 Small top-ups cost more: 5.5% of $10 is $0.55, below the minimum, so you pay the full $0.80. Top up $15 or more at a time to get the real 5.5% rate · the Business plan charges 8% · there are no volume discounts for now

How do you pay from Thailand?
The official pages list all major credit cards, AliPay and cryptocurrency in USDC. PayPal is not available yet (they say they are working on it). Everything is priced and charged in USD. No official page mentions Thailand, Thai baht or PromptPay, so we will not claim those work. The clear route for Thai users is paying by card in USD, which means your card issuer's exchange rate and foreign-currency fee come on top of the 5.5%. That number differs by card, so ask your bank before a large top-up. There is also an auto top-up that refills when your balance drops below a threshold you set.
⚠️ Paying in USDC has a lower fee (5%) but is never refundable. If you do not already hold USDC, use a card.
How far do the free models go?
There are 25+ free models, marked with the :free suffix, for example google/gemma-4-31b-it:free. You can also call openrouter/free and let the router pick a free model. The limit is on requests, and it depends on how much credit you have ever bought:
| Total credits bought | Per day | Per minute |
|---|---|---|
| Under $10 | 50 requests | 20 requests |
| $10 or more | 1,000 requests | 20 requests |
⚠️ If you are testing seriously, buying $10 (fee $0.80) lifts the cap to 1,000 a day, a better deal than living on 50. But OpenRouter's own FAQ says free models are usually not suitable for production, and a negative credit balance can cause 402 errors even on free models.

| Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 ($4 above 272,000 prompt tokens) | $10 ($15) |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | $0.75 | $3.75 |
| Gemma 4 31B | $0.09 (:free = $0) | $0.34 (:free = $0) |

OpenRouter or direct from the provider?
Decide by how many models you really use, not by how easy sign-up is:
- •Several models, or still choosing → OpenRouter. One key, and you change only the model name in code
- •The system must not go down → OpenRouter. It load-balances providers by price with automatic fallbacks, and a
modelsarray sets backup models in priority order. You are billed for the model that answered. The:nitrosuffix routes to the fastest endpoints,:floorto the cheapest - •One provider, always → buy direct and skip the 5.5%
- •You already hold provider keys but want the routing → BYOK. The fee is 5% of the normal OpenRouter cost, waived on the first $25,000 of usage a month
- •Data must not leave the company → run locally. See Ollama vs LM Studio
💡 Simple rule: two or more models, or you need fallbacks → OpenRouter · one provider → buy direct · sensitive data → local
Limits to know before you top up
The downsides sit in the terms, not on the pricing page:
- •Credits can expire. OpenRouter reserves the right to expire unused credits 365 days after purchase, so do not prepay a year ahead
- •Refunds only within 24 hours, for unused credits. Platform fees are not refunded, and crypto never is
- •Some providers may train on your data. OpenRouter says it does not train on inputs or outputs and by default logs only metadata, not prompts. You still have to set your account privacy settings, or send
"provider": {"zdr": true}for Zero Data Retention - •Provider rate limits still apply. Paid models have no platform-level request cap, but each provider may set its own
Verdict: is OpenRouter worth it?
Yes, if you use more than one model or want the system to switch models when a provider fails. The 5.5% buys you out of managing several accounts and keys. No, if you stay with one provider: then the 5.5% buys nothing. For a Thai business just starting, top up $20 by card, try two or three models on real work, then decide whether to stay or move to buying direct.
